How to introduce yourself in an original way during an interview to make an impression
Who doesn’t dread the moment when someone, perhaps during a job interview, asks you to briefly introduce yourself?
Yet, the subject we are asked about is the one we should know better than any other: ourselves.
Out of the thousands of things you could say, which could be the most interesting to make an impression? Surely the key point is just how to start a kick-off speech.
This first step will define your personality, at least for your interviewer: the employer.
What is the mistake to absolutely avoid during a job interview? Do not repeat what you have already written in your Curriculum Vitae, partly because it has already been evaluated before the face-to-face meeting, so it is important to add new information that on paper may not transpire.
Three simple tips for successfully presenting yourself
Whether the job interview takes place in person, on the phone or a video call, it makes little difference. Your emotional state will still shine through.
1) How to answer the question “Who are you?”
We are simply asked to talk about ourselves, but how to do it? Depending on the context, you need to provide information that shows your character, your personality, better than a piece of paper can.
You will have to delve into Storytelling, one of the many Soft Skills related to voice.
Telling about one’s choices related to study or previous professional experiences is certainly suitable for a job interview, but the same strategy is also suitable for a dating or casual encounter.
The important thing is always the context. But be careful because you have to be concise and practical, for each person’s ability to remember a series of events is limited.
They will definitely remember the last thing you say, and so you will determine subsequent events. At the end of the day, what should they remember about you?
2) How to start a presentation speech
Nothing could be simpler, from your name and your current situation. Take this time to repeat things you probably already know so that you can continue naturally.
Are you still studying? Are you seeking professional growth? All it takes is one sentence, clearly accompanied by a smile. There will be no fear, anxiety or hesitation since you are clear about what your name is and what your situation is, right?
Go on to state your main training and experiences you have had in recent months, not a complete list: make a selection of two or three items that are relevant to your interviewer.
Show that you are proud of the choices you have previously made perhaps by adding small details, a passion/hobby of yours that somehow deepens your expertise in the field.
The goal is to differentiate yourself from everyone else by showing what sets you apart and makes you unique. This should all last no more than a few minutes (learn more about elevator pitches).
3) How to wrap up a presentation speech
Once you have introduced yourself, it is time to define why you are there: what your values, desires and expectations are. This is the most important part of your introduction.
How to answer the question, “Why are you here?”, “Why did you apply to work at this company?”, “Why this company and not another?”
That is why the concluding sentence of your presentation should be something like “This has strengthened my desire to….” This will help the employer understand the person in front of him today and whether that person can bring added value to his company.
How to make a good first impression and introduce yourself in an original way
You will find thousands of coaches ready to convince you that the right strategy is to prepare a mini written presentation to be mastered by heart. This is the mistake of so many coaches who take business communication skills for granted.
If you have had any experience of this kind, you will have had firsthand knowledge and understanding that this solution is not at all helpful. When preparing a written presentation, you are not wrapped up in your emotions and expectations; on the contrary, you tend to exaggerate and embellish things.
Those words, wonderful on paper, when spoken during an important moment, whether it is a job interview or a social gathering, will appear out of tune, far removed from your personality. Because emotions are the most important part of any communication.
This is precisely why here at Inborn Voice we teach you how to get in touch with and master your emotions so that your personality can shine through even in moments of tension, anxiety or great difficulty.
How to express one’s strengths without appearing bold or exaggerated?
Just imprint your own personal brand.
Every interview will be summed up in what the recruiter will remember about you. Whether it is your dynamism, your eagerness to work, your good humor, or even your curiosity or seriousness, you will leave a mark.
So many coaches will try to convince you of the relevance of elements such as your smile, the way you make eye contact, your listening skills, your gestures, your upright posture, and many other “micro” elements, but don’t be fooled and save your time and your money.
Your voice is the engine, the backbone of any interview. It is your voice, connected to your Inborn Voice that will harmonize all the other elements and transfer your emotions correctly and authentically.
That is why more and more professionals are choosing to attend Workshops dedicated to Identity, Voice and Personal Brand. It’s not what you say but how you say it that matters, always remember that.
Sample self introduction for a job interview
Let’s conclude with an example of a presentation speech to “show off” during a job interview.
“My name is John Smith. I recently graduated in education from the University of New York.
This summer I worked doing animation at the community center, and now I am excited to start offering my contribution in the school world as well.
During my internship at the Montessori Institute in Manhattan, I created several teaching plans that I look forward to putting into practice.
I myself attended this school, and I think I would be perfect for the role you are looking for in second grade.
I would be happy to teach at the same school that sparked in me the desire to become a teacher.”
