The beauty of saying NO naturally and freely

Valeria Casani: We are here today because we have a guest, one of our very first teachers on class issues. We spoke with Milena right at the beginning of this journey. She wrote to me, and I felt very honored when I found her email on LinkedIn. So, she tells her story because she has so many stories and so much expertise that even with a screen in front of me, I wouldn’t have been able to tell them all. We did a live Girl Restart on Instagram with Milena Vocal Coach, and she then became one of our CEOs for CEO Factory.

Today she was in Italy, so we invited her in person. Thank you for being here! The topic you are discussing today, “the beauty of saying No,” is a wonderful one because perhaps we women are not very good at saying “no,” so I think it will be very useful for me and for everyone to listen to your talk.

Milena Origgi: I would like to reiterate how happy I am to be here and how happy I am to have met Valeria first, then Marina, and many other Girl Restart members, who I think are an incredible group, beautiful but above all full of passion, and that is what fascinates me.

As Valeria said, some of you probably already know me, some of you have already read some interviews. This image speaks for itself, but I want to tell you the story of a person who was born, not in a basement, but certainly in a small space and in a fairly normal place, but with big dreams.

Let’s start this story in 1998, when I founded this company, Inborn Voice. It’s a strange name that even today, even in America, when I say Inborn Voice, people look at me and ask, “What is Inborn Voice?” Inborn Voice is the voice that was born with us, not the innate voice, but the voice that was born with us. During this presentation, you will understand exactly what I mean. We revolutionized international coaching by demonstrating for the first time ever an indissoluble correlation between voice and emotion. Why? Because before, the voice was just a sound, a measurable sound, and then, as you will see later, it was strictly rationalized. There is no voice without emotion, there is no emotion without voice. And there is a lot to say here. In the same year, people began to take more and more interest in my method, and I opened my first studio in Milan.

In 2010, I proudly opened it in London instead. What happened in that small room in London? Many of my clients arrived, some for artistic reasons, actors and voice actors. Then one day, a very successful man walked through the door of my studio and said to me, “Do you really want to stop here?” What did he mean? “I came to learn how to sing a song and prove that I can do it, even though I consider myself tone deaf. And you succeeded!” “You have a great future in the corporate world, in the business world. Go for it! Be bold!”

London came soon after, in the same year. We were true pioneers in 2010, offering online lessons with Hong Kong and the United States. Clients talked about me to others, who then became my clients too. They talked about how much they liked the Inborn Voice method, whether for artistic ambitions or for business purposes.

In 2015, with great effort, I moved to Boston. You will surely find something about it in the newspapers. It was not easy at all. I brought an education and training company to the United States of America, where every Italian who visits the embassy is asked if they are bringing pizza, rice, or something else to eat. I was the only one, extravagant, but fate, in quotation marks, my Inborn Voice guided me there. Then in 2019, it expanded, and I have to tell you the truth, compared to Boston, New York vibrates much better with those who want to make their way and be successful. So shortly after, quickly, very quickly, I opened Miami and Los Angeles. If someone asked me, “Will you stay in Boston?”, I don’t know now. Most of my clients are in New York and Los Angeles, and there’s a lot of movement, especially for some in Copertino, in the California area.

Today, I am the most sought-after executive vocal coach in the world, according to statistics, with over 30,000 online sessions under my belt. I started here in Milan. There are 13 different time zones and more than five languages. I hold retreats and workshops all over the world. Why? Because I love it! Because studying the voice, indigenous peoples, and their frequencies is something that fills the soul. My work has therefore also been taken to heart by those who train the managers of the future, and I was the first and only executive voice coach to be appointed topic expert for a university, thanks to my preparation of the Communication Skills and Personal Development course. Many continue to talk about communication at university in an extremely rational way, but my view, as you will see later, is a revolutionary one. My way of looking at vocality is slowly gaining ground in some universities, including the Catholic University here in Milan.

So this is my goal, my milestone. So, girls, I’m sure some of you have confused it with the COVID green pass, but it’s actually a Green Card for extraordinary abilities. This was the result of about 3 kg of documentation collected from famous and not-so-famous clients, who demonstrated the exclusivity of my extraordinary abilities in the field of voice coaching and voice awareness. This Genius Green Card obviously allowed me to live in the United States indefinitely. I left Milan and never expected it, but at 17 I had an idea. In fact, the first time I went to New York, I said to myself, “I’ll be back here.” And so it was. This achievement is even rarer than the Nobel Prize. Precisely because it is incredibly important for Italy. Because we will open up many other things with our voices, including medicine and artificial intelligence.

Here’s what I say: believe it! Today we’re going to talk about the beauty of saying NO. And I’m glad so many of you are here because clearly this NO is not so easy to say. But how do you say NO? Naturally and freely. In Italy, this sound is incredibly important, but listen carefully to what I said: sound. A NO is how we interpret it.
