First Meeting with a Client: Is It Better to Offer It for Free or Charge a Fee?
There’s no one-size-fits-all answer, because it depends on the purpose of the meeting and your perspective. Here, we’ll share some insights into the choices we’ve made here at Inborn Voice for over 20 years.
The Salesperson’s Perspective
The first thing to understand is that whoever offers a free initial consultation is, at that moment, taking on the role of a salesperson. They are not a Good Samaritan. For them, it’s a way to lower the barrier to entry and attract customers who would otherwise slip away.
Of course, this salesperson is fully aware that their potential client might skip the appointment, seek advice, and apply it without ever coming back. And that’s precisely why the free initial consultation is never truly free. It’s actually a sales pitch: its purpose is to sell a service, never to provide it. Anyone who thinks they’ve received a free service actually walks away with nothing useful and feels almost obligated to continue.
Here at Inborn Voice, the first session is the most important of all. I’ll go further: it’s the most demanding of all, because it measures, evaluates, and sets the stage for everything that follows. The first session serves to thoroughly understand a person’s needs, priorities, and values, not to “capture” a client. We are fully aware of the value of our time and our consulting services, and we’re also certain that this difference will seem even more striking to those who compare us to providers offering a free initial consultation. We can confidently say that our Assessment Session is, in itself, a service.
The Client’s Perspective
Those who aren’t yet sure whether a professional is right for them tend to view a free consultation as a way to try it out risk-free and, if necessary, to compare services they consider similar.
Few realize, however, that a free consultation is almost always a sales pitch in disguise. At that moment, the consultant is a salesperson aiming to close the deal, so their advice will never be truly impartial, and they’ll present things as quick and easy. Purchasing a Voice Assessment session guarantees you independence: you get an honest opinion, even if it’s “you don’t need any of this.” Furthermore, paying always yields something tangible: the client walks away with real value even if they don’t sign up, and the entire session will be dedicated to consulting. Not a single moment of a Voice Assessment session will be spent on a sales pitch. The salespeople will handle the sales aspect.
